Our Teaching Philosophy
Just as every child has a unique personality,
every child has a unique way of learning.
When the learning method is aligned with a child’s individual needs,
learning becomes both more efficient and less stressful.
From that sense of ease and efficiency,
confidence grows naturally.
There Is No Single “Correct” Way to Learn
Many educational systems expect children to adapt to one fixed teaching style.
At Ikoma Abacus, we believe the opposite:
teaching should adapt to the child.
By understanding how each student thinks, reacts, and makes mistakes,
we can choose the most effective way to guide them forward.
Confidence Is Built Through Understanding, Not Pressure
True confidence does not come from being pushed or compared to others.
It comes from understanding,
“I know why I made this mistake”
and
“I know how to fix it.”
When children experience this process repeatedly,
confidence becomes something they create themselves.
Mistakes Are an Essential Part of Learning
Mistakes are not signs of failure.
They are signs of learning in progress.
In our classroom,
children are encouraged to acknowledge mistakes openly
and work through them step by step.
This builds resilience and emotional strength,
not just academic skill.
Teaching the Child, Not the Curriculum
We do not follow a rigid manual.
Each lesson is adjusted based on
the child’s ability, personality, and emotional state on that day.
This flexible approach allows children to learn efficiently
while feeling safe, respected, and understood.
Why Abacus?
Abacus is not only a calculation tool.
It is a way to build mental math ability, concentration, and self-confidence at a child’s own pace.
Japanese abacus training strengthens numerical sense,
concentration, and mental flexibility.
More importantly,
it provides clear feedback:
numbers show results honestly.
This clarity helps children recognize their progress
and trust their own abilities.
Experience Behind the Philosophy
This philosophy is based on experience, not theory.
With the highest rank in Japanese abacus (9th Dan),
over 25 years of teaching experience,
and personal parenting experience,
we understand both the technical and emotional sides of learning.
This allows us to identify each child’s needs quickly
and guide them effectively.
Helping Children Believe in Themselves
Our goal is not to create children who never fail.
Our goal is to create children who can face failure,
stand back up,
and believe in themselves.
